Clinical Mental Health Counsellor Jenny Shumaker of Top Charlotte Therapists

Jenny Shumaker

Jenny Shumaker is a graduate level intern at University of the Cumberlands pursuing her Master of Arts degree in Clinical Mental Health Counseling. During her clinical experience at Top Charlotte Therapists, she will be practicing in person and teletherapy services for adult women and groups under supervision of the practice manager, Angie Mayo, LCSW.

Expressing authentic thoughts, recognizing, and releasing emotions, and becoming attuned to the body’s physiological feelings and actions, can be an overwhelming process. As therapists, we must first provide an atmosphere of safety, and be willing to meet each client with empathy, patience, and compassion, to provide empowerment for them to embark on the transformative process that takes place in therapy.

Whether we are experiencing struggles with life transitions, issues of trust, self-worth, or conditions such as anxiety, depression, stress, trauma, chronic pain, or illness, we need a therapist who can really see, hear, and hold space for our stories with attunement, nonjudgmental understanding, authenticity, compassion, and encouragement.

Jenny uses an integrative approach that draws from person-centered therapy, existentialism, and the constructivist school of thought. Her empathic nature, belief in finding meaning and purpose in life, and love for language has led her to appreciate narrative therapy. This type of therapy helps empower our ability to see that we are not internally flawed, but that our lives are influenced by our environment, culture, physiology, and experiences. When we search for the meaning and purpose in these things, we can uncover a new story about how they have made us into who we are, rather than who we are not.
